The Principles of Clinical Design
1. The Substrate Defines the Signal
Background color is not decoration. It is the substrate upon which signal operates. Clinical aesthetic uses:
- Frost white (#F8F7F4): Not pure white. White with warmth removed. The color of laboratory surfaces, medical equipment, sterile environments.
- Void black (#0D0E10): Not pure black. Black with depth added. Used for contrast moments, not as default.
- Near-black (#0C0C0B): For text on frost white. Sufficient contrast without harshness.
The substrate creates the psychological frame. Frost white signals precision. Void black signals authority.
2. Typography as Measurement
Clinical design uses monospace fonts exclusively. IBM Plex Mono. Roboto Mono. System monospace. The choice signals:
- Data, not narrative
- Function, not expression
- System, not personality
Hierarchy is achieved through:
- Scale (10px labels, 14px body, 18px headers)
- Weight (400 regular, 700 bold, nothing else)
- Spacing (0.2em letter-spacing for uppercase, 0.02em for body)
- Case (uppercase for system language, lowercase for content)
3. The Grid as Calibration
Every clinical interface includes a structural grid:
- 36px base unit
- 1px dot grid at 10% opacity
- Golden ratio positioning for focal elements (61.8% horizontal, 38.2% vertical)
The grid is not decoration. It is calibration. A reminder that every element exists within a coordinate system.
4. Color as State
Clinical palettes encode meaning:
- Signal lime (#E6FF1B): Single activation per viewport. Status. Alert. Confirmation.
- Signal blue (#0033FF): System calls. Links. Active states.
- Authority red (#DC1212): Critical. Propaganda mode only.
No gradients. No transparencies. No pastels. Each color has a defined function.
